Goodsprings, a town of 300 people 10 miles from Jean, was founded in 1900 and the first school opened there in 1913 to serve the population of 800 at the time. The school operated for 113 years, making it the state’s oldest continuous public school (UNR dates back to 1885), but with only two students remaining and two employees, a teacher and custodian), the Clark County School District Board of Trustees voted to shut it down for good. The two-room schoolhouse cost $2,000 to build and residents hope to turn it into a museum. The last two students will be bused to Sandy Valley, 14 miles from Goodsprings and 35 miles southwest of Vegas, where the middle- and high-school students from Goodsprings attend school.
