Mojave Max, southern Nevadas desert-tortoise mascot and weather oracle, emerged from his burrow yesterday shortly after noon, breaking the previous record for his latest arrival by nearly 48 hours. The earliest date Max emerged was on Feb. 14, 2005; he was looking for roses, chocolate, and a love letter that year. Max entered his a burrow to brumate (the reptilian form of hibernating) in early November and remained inactive for more than five months.
