An estimated 230,000 EDC attendees cleared out just in time for 300,000 visitors to flood the city for the long Memorial Day weekend. The unofficial start of the summer travel season, AAA estimates an all-time record of 45 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home and Las Vegas is the fourth top destination, according to AAA’s booking data, behind Orlando, New York City, and Seattle (though we might question the Seattle ranking). Apparently, higher gasoline prices aren’t impacting visitor numbers and room rates reflect it; the luxe Strip properties are charging more than $500 per night, with the highest tier in the four figures. Downtown and the locals casinos are getting half that. Basic strategy: Don’t drop by for a bargain room or unreserved meal at a nice restaurant.
