Like many things in life, sports betting scales the heights (Mattress Mack’s record-setting hedge wins, Blair Rodman’s book All about Sports Betting) and plumbs the depths. Here are a few of the most recent latter. A study by the Urban Institute, a think tank that researches economic and social policy, found that online sports bettors make bigger and riskier bets, save less money for the future, and are 15X more likely to fall behind on bills than their counterparts who gamble only at casinos or racetracks. The survey compared the betting habits and financial outcomes of more than 320 online and in-person sports bettors. A controversy involving Nathan’s July 4 hot-dog eating contest has surfaced that might or might not involve cheating, but has some over/under bettors peeved about the total dogs downed by women’s winner Niko Suki and her husband, fellow competitor Nick Wehry.
