In early May, the 12-acre south Strip site of the failed SkyVue observation wheel was sold to a local real estate developer for $70 million. If you’ve driven past this acreage in the past 15 years, you’ve seen the two concrete support columns left over from that particular pipe dream. Big plans were announced for a heart-shaped 874-room hotel-casino, giant heart-shaped LED marquee, Fremont Street Experience-like covered pedestrian plaza, theater, and 265-foot-high “midair restaurant” that would incorporate the two smokestacks into the new property. After a review by the Federal Aviation Administration, the hotel tower was reduced by six stories and 122 rooms. Yesterday, the Clark County commissioners approved the revised plans, as they always do; now we wait and see what happens with the so-called “Heart Hotel,” for which financing, timeline, and official name have yet to be revealed.
