There’s a YouTube channel, The Ed Sullivan Show Live from Las Vegas, showing 15 performances on his show that were taped in Las Vegas. They range from the late 1950s, with Patti Page and Louis Armstrong to the late ’60s with the Chamber Brothers and Fifth Dimension. But the one that caught our eye is “Ed Gives History on Las Vegas.” It’s a three-minute montage of Vegas from July 1958. The aerials are a bit shaky, but you’ll see how our town looked nearly 70 years ago: the airport, one-armed bandits, the Convention Center under construction, a dude ranch, the Stardust stage, the Desert Inn Golf Course. It’s a blast from a past when Ed Sullivan was one of the kings of TV and Vegas was among the most exotic cities in the country. And thanks to LVA correspondent XY for the link.
