Las Vegas ranked 16th for the densest metropolitan area in the U.S., according to a study by the UNLV Lied Center for Real Estate. The study compared 233 of the largest metro regions in terms of overall sprawl, density, land use, street connectivity, and other technical metrics. It found that the Las Vegas valley’s population is more compacted than 93% of the country’s urban areas, including “peer cities” Phoenix, Houston, and San Diego. The study concluded that the sprawl is limited by geographical constraints, being surrounded by mountains, and federal land-use policies, so “infill development” concentrates the population more tightly in the available space.
