VisualCapitalist.com used April 2026 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics to show unemployment rates in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Nationally, the unemployment rate stood at 4.3%, but the highs and lows were notable. Washington, D.C., posted the highest unemployment rate at 6.2%, nearly triple South Dakotas 2.2%, the lowest. Nevada tied for second with California and Delaware at 5.3%, followed by Oregon and Washington at 5.2%. VisualCapitalist attributed the higher rates in the west to tech layoffs, slowing tourism, and a softer business environment.
